The "Apple Scruffs" was the nickname for a group of hardcore Beatles fans, mostly female, who were
known for congregating outside the Apple Corps building and at the gates of Abbey Road Studios in
London, in hopes of seeing the band members. As avid Beatles fans themselves, it seemed like an
appropriate name for the band. The Beatles' song "She Came In Through the Bathroom Window" refers
to the day that some of the Apple Scruffs climbed into Paul McCartney's house thru a bathroom window
and raided his wardrobe for a pair of trousers which they took turns wearing. Following the breakup
of the Beatles, George Harrison wrote a song entitled "Apple Scruffs" which appeared on his solo album
All Things Must Pass.
Fab Five!
The five members of the band are all young, experienced, and versatile musicians. Originally formed
as a "just for fun" side project in 2007, they decided to take the band to the next level and
perform professionally in early 2009. Three of them teach music and have formal musical backgrounds
in jazz and other styles of music. Four of the members play multiple instruments and alternate
between guitar, keyboards, and bass. They recognized the challenges in accurately playing the music
live, especially since many songs on The Beatles last few albums were bascially "studio recordings"
that they never intended to play live, since they had quit touring and doing live concerrts. These
songs included orchestras, unique instruments such as sitar and piccolo trumpet, numerous guitar
tracks, keyboards, and multiple vocal harmonies. For this reason The Apple Scruffs have five members,
not four, to more accurately replicate the music of The Beatles. They also use some of the same
model instruments and amps as The Beatles did to help capture the sound, including a Hofner bass,
Epiphone Casino guitar, Vox guitar amp, and a vintage Ludwig drum set from the early 60's.
